Fossil Echinoids
These exceptionally well-preserved fossil echinoids are a type of sea urchin known as “sea-biscuits” and are from some of the oldest rock native to Florida. Modern descendants can be found in the Bahamas. They lived in a shallow sea that covered much of Florida and Georgia during the Eocene Epoch about 34 million years ago. After the animals died, they were buried in fine sediments which preserved their intricate details. We excavate these unique specimens from islands in the Gulf of Mexico and carefully prepare them to preserve the fine details of the shells.
