Multiple very clear stromatolite colonies throughout the specimen and in a variety of colors with contrasting dark laminae. All the more impressive because it’s from the world-famous Gunflint Iron Formation. This piece is from our original discovery in 2025. Beautiful colonies with strawberry and deep red colonies with dark laminae bands characteristic of this site. This is unlike anything we’ve ever seen.   • Grypania Spiralis (GRY12)

    Notes specific to this specimen: An absolute stellar specimen! There were only a few specimens recovered that showed such abundance and contrast. This particular horizon we called “Grypania Heaven” due to its stellar appearance. This super-rich slab is populated with dozens of showy and very distinct Grypania, many with characteristic curvature and arcs. In addition, some of the specimens have desiccation distortion along the sheath

    Notes specific to this specimen: This sizeable slab shows abundant evidence of fragmentary Grypania, although there are some longer pieces with the telltale arching strings. The impressions are numerous but not very apparent except under close inspection.

    Notes specific to this specimen: Beautiful deep red agatization in these cross-cut colonies attest to the classic origin of this specimen as being from the old Mary Ellen Mine in Biwabik, Minnesota, the type locality for the Biwabik Iron Formation. The mine shut down over 50 years ago. We find these specimens in the old discard piles that surround the old pit. *This specimen comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and Origin.
