DEATH FLOW specimen – Super rare and unusual! – Here are two complete Elrathia triloibites that escaped the full force of the “Death Flow” megaspecimen that we uncovered in 2004. You can see the very edge of the death line at the top – with hundreds of trilibite fragments both large and small all mashed together. Though they escaped the full force, they were caught in the front part of the mudslide and succumbed nonetheless. Professionally prepared using air-abrade. Gunflint Chert (GIS16)
Notes specific to this specimen: These stromatolites from the Gunflint Iron are so incredibly unusual. Every one is so unique! I’ve never seen such a variety of pattern and color as we do in these. This one has purple, red, white, yellow, brown, grey, black and more! This piece is wedge-shaped, so we polished two perpendicular sides to show the longitudinal and cross cut of the colonies. Beautiful piece!

Notes specific to this specimen: Beautiful deep red agatization in these colonies attest to the classic origin of this specimen as being from the old Mary Ellen Mine in Biwabik, Minnesota, the type locality for the Biwabik Iron Formation. Notice the off-set angle of the growth pattern in this piece. This is attributed to constant water currents in the area where these colonies were growing.

Multiple very clear stromatolite colonies throughout the specimen and in a variety of colors with contrasting dark laminae. All the more impressive because it’s from the world-famous Gunflint Iron Formation. This piece is from our original discovery in 2025. Beautiful colonies with strawberry and deep red colonies with dark laminae bands characteristic of this site. This is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Crystalized Welks (W3)

But, when you do find a nice crystal-line specimen, there’s nothing like it in the world! Here we have a nice matrix specimen with a natural opening on the side of the shell exposing gemmy dog-tooth calcite crystals. They don’t get much better than this!
