Crystalized Welks (W2)
Notes specific to this specimen: Fossil welks are much rarer than the clams found at Rucks Pit and most of them have no crystals. But, when you do find a nice crystal-line specimen, there’s nothing like it in the world! This is a single welk with a natural opening on its dorsal (top) allowing you to see the crystal lining of the shell and the gray sparite “floor” that was the sediment which partially filled the shell after the animal had died. Very unusual.

Notes specific to this specimen: This is one of the original discovery pieces, collected by us in August 2025. It is characteristic of all the variety of colors found in this site. We’ve never seen such a variety of colors of stromatolite from a single site. It reminded us of all the colors of Arizona petrified wood – known as “Rainbow Wood” – and this became the source for our naming this new discovery “Rainbow Stromatolite”.

Notes specific to this specimen: Nice light-purple amethyst vein running diagonally through this piece. Has great white quartz healed fracture veins on the side and another amethyst cavity in the back. There’s even a small one on the cut bottom! This piece has a flat bottom so it stands up and displays very nicely. Take a look at the bottom and you’ll see the very graphic splitting of the matrix and the subsequent infilling.

Volcanic Bomb (EB4)
