• Potomac Marble Sculpture

Notes specific to this specimen: You won’t find this on the market anywhere! Why? Because we are the only people who excavate and sculpt this beautiful and unusual historic material. Also called Capitol Marble, this Triassic conglomerate is featured as the columns in the US Capitol National Statuary Hall rotunda. They hold up the main Capitol Dome. Interestingly, the location of the quarry where this material was mined was lost for 200 years. But the old quarry site was finally found a few years ago. We visited the site which is along the C & O canal (near milepost 38) in 2024. It hosts the exact same rock we collect for carving at Point of Rocks, some 12 miles upstream where this piece is from. This freeform was sculpted by Jon in 2022 and has a flat bottom for easy display. It features a highly polished partial helix on the front and a contrasting natural back, showing how the rock is found in its rough state.

    HOW IT FORMED

Paleozoic mountains that were being uplifted during the Triassic Period as North America and Africa were colliding. About 205 million years ago these rivers carried broken pieces of dolomite into a basin where they were buried. As the layers accumulated in depth, heat and pressure built up and eventually cemented everything together. Later the layers were pushed up and erosion removed the sediments above, exposing this unique rock in certain locations along the Potomac River.

  • Cerdito Prospect Rift Crystals (CP2)

Notes specific to this specimen:  Incredible combination of small clear quartz crystals with purple fluorite crystals over top of botryoidal green fluorite.  Nice standup piece has sawn-flat bottom and back showing the dynamic cracks and infilling produced by the North American Midcontinent Rift which happened about 1.1 billion years ago.   Because of the fluorite, it fluoresces very strong purple/blue.

  • Crystalized Welks (W4)

Notes specific to this specimen: Fossil welks are much rarer than the clams found at Rucks Pit and most of them have no crystals. But, when you do find a nice crystal-line specimen, there’s nothing like it in the world! Here we have a nice natural window on the top side of the shell exposing beautiful gemmy dog-tooth calcite crystals on the inside. Also has a well-defined protoconch (the “tip” where the shell began). They don’t get much better than this!

  • Crystalized Clam (OK5)

Notes specific to this specimen: Great honey calcite crystals replacing multiple clam shells trapped in matrix. Some excellent radial calcite crystals here! This piece has a sawn flat bottom so it stands up nicely on its own.

  • Dinosaur Bones (D2)

Notes specific to this specimen: Commonly called the “hoof” of a hadrosaur – in this case Edmontosaurus – this is the end bone of a pes digit (toe). In vertebrates, the ends of the front appendages are called the “manus” (aka hand) while the back are called the “pes” (aka foot). The asymmetry here indicates this was likely a toe on the right side of the animal. The fine detail on the bone surface is exquisite and remarkably well preserved. This piece has no reconstruction.

  • Volcanic Bomb (EB1)

Notes specific to this specimen: Large, excellent, classic fusiform bomb with superb aerodynamic striations. Natural split reveals chalcedony interior which fluoresces a vibrant green. This specimen is first class.

  • Cerdito Prospect Rift Crystals (CP10)

Notes specific to this specimen: Both smokey quartz and amethyst crowded on the front face. Beautiful fracture infills showing on both sides. Also has a nice amethyst-lined hollow on the back with amethyst veins all over. This piece has a flat bottom so it stands up and displays very nicely. Take a look at the cut bottom and you’ll see the very graphic splitting of the matrix and the subsequent infilling. Fantastic piece!

  • Cerdito Prospect Rift Crystals (CP7)

Notes specific to this specimen: Face has a coating of really nice smokey quartz crystals with some isolated clear and amethyst mixed in. Beautiful healed fracture infills showing on both sides. Also has a nice amethyst-lined hollow on the back with associated smokey quartz. This piece has a cut-flat bottom so it stands up and displays very nicely. Take a look at the cut bottom and you’ll see the very graphic splitting of the matrix and the subsequent infilling. This is a fantastic piece!

  • Volcanic Bomb (EB12)

Notes specific to this specimen: Large, rare, combination fusiform bomb. This is the result of three individual magma projectiles running into each other in flight. In this case the merge of these three individuals was early in the ejection event but after the individual projectiles had started acquiring their own individual character. The combination of these three bombs resulted in one very large cigar-shaped bomb which acquired it’s own form which dominated the final shape before falling back to Earth.

  • Volcanic Bomb (EB14)

Notes specific to this specimen: Rare double bomb. These unique specimens form when two magma projectiles run into each other in flight before they completely harden. In this case the merge was early in the ejection event, before the two projectiles had started to acquire their own individual character. Instead the combination of the two was almost obliterated by the overall form taking shape before they fell back to Earth.

  • St Clair Flora – rare preservation (F9)

Notes specific to this specimen: Two sided specimen – front and back are equally compelling with a dense accumulation of ferns.
